What Does Chewing Gum & A Mental Disorder Have In Common?

I guess I’m stuck in some frivolous time warp because this week I’m going to discuss chewing gum. Did you know that if you want to chew gum nowadays, most of the gum on the market contains aspartame? This applies to all chewing gums, not only sugar-free gum.

The reason I’ve singled out chewing gum is because if I chew gum that contains aspartame, my tongue develops small, painful cuts. After many months of wondering where these cuts were coming from, I finally realized it was the aspartame in the chewing gum. So, here’s the problem if you happen to like chewing gum. Try to find some that contain no aspartame–Chiclets and Big Red are the only ones I’ve found. That’s it!

Considering what aspartame does to my tongue, it got me thinking what it could be doing to one’s stomach.

This from a blog written by The Enlightened Homemaker

High intake of the artificial sweetener aspartame may lead to the degeneration of brain cells and various mental disorders, according to a research review conducted by South African scientists from the University of Pretoria and the University of Limpopo and published in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

That is definitely a whole lot worse than my little bitty tongue problem. So, it’s time to rethink your thoughtless ingestion of aspartame. Cut back, or cut out entirely. Read the labels, even if the product is not low-cal, because my tongue problem pales in comparison to what could be happening.

There are many other scientific studies being conducted on aspartame. More than I care to list here. But in regards to chewing gum, perhaps Italian artist Maurizio Savini is making the best use of chewing gum. He sculpts with it.

Artificial sweeteners are very dangerous. With most people you body will metabolize a small portion of the artificial sweetener as poison. A few people, myself included, have the problem of metabolizing most of the artificial sweetener as poison. In addition to the problems listed here, it will damage your liver and may lead to birth defects for children of women who consume lots of artificial sweeteners.
And if you think the stuff will help you loose weight, you are wrong. Consuming the stuff actually makes you hungrier so you wind up eating more not less.

Aspartame is the second most widely used artificial sweetener in the world. It is found in more than 6,000 products including carbonated and powdered soft drinks, hot chocolate, chewing gum, candy, desserts, yogurt, and tabletop sweeteners, as well as some pharmaceutical products like vitamins and sugar-free cough drops. More than 200 million people worldwide consume it. The sweetener has been used for more than 30 years, having first been approved by the FDA in 1974. Studies of the carcinogenicity of aspartame performed by its producers have been negative.Researchers administered aspartame to Sprague-Dawley rats by adding it to a standard diet. They began studying the rats at 8 weeks of age and continued until the spontaneous death of each rat. Treatment groups received feed that contained concentrations of aspartame at dosages simulating human daily intakes of 5,000, 2,500, 500, 100, 20, and 4 mg/kg body weight. Groups consisted of 100 males and 100 females at each of the three highest dosages and 150 males and 150 females at all lower dosages and controls.

    To Sugar Free Gum person-

Anytime a study is performed by its producer, the test automatically becomes suspect. Also, since the FDA doesn’t actually do any of its own testing, their recommendation is also suspect.

A product should not be presumed safe just because millions of people consume it. That’s like saying, if millions of people are jumping off a cliff, it’s okay for everyone else to do the same.

It disgusts me that it makes it impossible to boycott Monsanto. Perhaps Monsanto blackmailed & blackballed other businesses like they did the farmers until a law passed that their aspartame be in all this food and drink now?Perhaps when we all get sick they will conveniently come up with the antidote for the shirt on our backs!
